LIFEKANNAGREEN has been created to propose and define a new consumption and circular economy model for the footwear sector, based on the “cradle to cradle” principles, to change the way that footwear is produced and goods and resources are consumed, which involves all the key players of the value chain of the footwear sector to close the loop.
This model provides an innovative method and a group of technological solutions that will help manage the waste produced by the shoes at the end of their useful life, turning them into new shoes (more sustainable), to therefore close the loop. The concept is the “circular economy”.
The implementation of this model consists in establishing a system to collect used shoes in our shoe stores (off and online) on a European level to encourage and motivate consumers to recycle their shoes, separate and recycle the different parts of the shoes by getting social organisations involved and by making sustainable shoes using these recycled materials to reduce the impact of the footwear on the environment.
The LifeKannaGreen project is promoted by two leading companies in their field. Both companies share the respect for environmental and social values; they advocate the circular economy and the protection of the environment. These companies are Capiccio SL and Cambio Circular, SLU.
Objectives:
The Lifekannagreen project will contribute to the objectives of the priority areas of the LIFE environment sub-programme, the efficiency of the resources and the circular economy in the following way:

Objectives:
The Lifekannagreen project will contribute to the objectives of the priority areas of the LIFE environment sub-programme, the efficiency of the resources and the circular economy in the following way:
So far, the LIFE KANNA GREEN project has developed 3 prototypes:
KANNA GREEN boot in military style, designed in leather with a metal-free tanning process, closing with side elastics in recycled nylon in the same colour as the leather. Outsole made of recycled TPU rubber and recycled shoe material under a circular economy model.
Kanna Green Sneaker. Designed according to eco-design notions and under a circular economy model. Upper material made of recycled cotton and polyurethane. Recycled cotton laces. Inner lining in recycled bamboo and polyester fabric. Recycled polyurethane and rubber sole from recycled shoes. Sole stitched to the glove of the sneaker for easy separation at the end of the shoe’s life.
Capiccio is a Spanish SME specialized in the manufacture and marketing of footwear, present in 80 countries around the world, with 33 years of experience in this market. Jute is the signature of the main brand of the company, KANNA, which is related to ecological, natural and environmentally friendly footwear.
Implementation an end-of-life product recovery system must be established for post-consumer shoes in order to minimize the related environmental impacts and to take advantage of the economic value of the materials, components and products at the end of their useful life.
Our business project will help to reduce the energy cost of the footwear industry and will ensure that no waste streams from shoes are sent to landfill or incineration, through the use of out-of-use shoes in the development of new floors and materials, as well as less potential energy consumption when compared to conventional shoe manufacturing.
The Life Kanna Green project has received funding from the European Union under grant agreement n° LIFE19ENV/EN/000118
